Taiwan chipmaker TSMC reported a largely flat fourth-quarter revenue on Wednesday, but that still beat both the company's and market's expectations. Revenue in the final three months of last year came in at T$625.5 billion ($20.10 billion), according to Reuters calculations, compared with $19.93 billion in the year-ago period. That beat Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's, or TSMC, previous prediction for fourth-quarter revenue being in a range of between $18.8-19.6 billion, and also beat an LSEG SmartEstimate of T$617.1 billion drawn from 21 analysts. For December alone, TSMC reported that revenue fell 8.4% year-on-year to T$176.3 billion, which was down 14.4% compared with the previous month. TSMC, Asia's most valuable publicly listed company with a market capitalization of $491 billion, did not provide any details or forward guidance in its brief revenue statement.

The forecast-beating results by the world's most advanced chipmaker follows better-than-expected quarterly profit from rival Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) earlier this month. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) , the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier, saw July-September net profit fall to T$211 billion from T$280.9 billion a year earlier. The profit beat a T$195.5 billion LSEG SmartEstimate, which is weighted toward forecasts from analysts who are more consistently accurate. Capital expenditure in the third quarter was $7.1 billion, TSMC said, compared with $8.17 billion in the previous quarter.

A logo of Taiwanse chip giant TSMC can be seen in Tainan, Taiwan December 29, 2022. The likely decline in profit also reflects a strong performance last year, when the company was still riding high on pent-up post-pandemic demand. The world's largest contract chipmaker is set to report net profit of T$195.9 billion ($6 billion) for July-September - its second straight quarter of profit decline, according to an LSEG SmartEstimate drawn from 19 analysts. Given that, much of Thursday's focus will be on TSMC's outlook for the fourth quarter and beyond. Fubon Securities expects a slow start to next year for TSMC, with 10% growth in the first quarter, predicting order cancellations towards the year end and mild restocking demand.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTAIPEI, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW) said on Friday it expects to receive permission from the United States to supply its China plant with U.S. chipmaking tools indefinitely, in an easing of Washington's restrictions on foreign chipmakers operating in China. "We expect to receive a permanent authorization through the VEU process," TSMC said, noting that it did not previously need to apply for VEU status. Taiwan Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua said earlier on Friday that TSMC has received the waiver from the United States to supply U.S. equipment to the company's factory in China. However, the United States is continuing efforts to cut China off from top AI technology and plug gaps in export controls. The United States last year shook relations with Beijing when it unveiled new restrictions on shipments of AI chips and chipmaking tools to China, seeking to thwart its military advances.

[1/2] A logo of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) is seen at its headquarters in Hsinchu, Taiwan August 31, 2018. The world's largest contract chipmaker estimated investment spending for this year at the lower end of a previous estimate of $32-$36 billion amid challenges from rising inflationary costs and an uncertain global economic outlook. For the second quarter ended June, TSMC, a major Apple Inc (AAPL.O) supplier, reported a 23.3% fall in net profit - beating forecasts - although it was its first on-year drop in quarterly profit since the second quarter of 2019 when it fell 7.6%. TSMC saw April-June net profit drop to T$181.8 billion ($5.85 billion) from T$237.0 billion a year earlier. TSMC, Asia's most valuable listed company, said second-quarter revenue dropped 13.7% year-on-year to $15.68 billion, in line with the company's previous forecast.

One senior Taiwan fund manger told Reuters that third quarter profit would bounce back given expectations for AI demand and launches of new iPhones ahead of the year-end holiday shopping season. The second quarter is traditionally a slow period for sales for the tech industry with demand usually picking up in the third quarter and towards the year-end shopping season. TSMC , Asia's most valuable listed company, posted a surprise rise in net profit for the quarter ended March, up 2% from a year earlier. The company will provide guidance for the third quarter and update previous forecasts on its earnings call at 0600 GMT on Thursday. TAIPEI, July 6 (Reuters) - Taiwan's TSMC (2330.TW), the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Thursday it does not expect any direct impact on its production from China's decision to restrict exports of two metals widely used in semiconductors and electric vehicles. That followed the U.S. decision to impose export restrictions to curb China's access to key technologies used for artificial intelligence. "After evaluation, we do not expect the export restrictions on raw materials gallium and germanium will have any direct impact on TSMC's production," Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said in an emailed statement. China's restrictions will have a very limited impact on the company's short-term procurement and wafer production and delivery, WIN added. Visual Photonics Epitaxy said it had noticed little effect so far from China's export restrictions.

The first Arizona chip fabrication facility, or fab, is scheduled to be operational by 2024. TSMC did not disclose how many workers from Taiwan are currently in Arizona. The additions will not impact the 12,000 workers currently on-site every day or U.S.-based hiring, it added. While TSMC has said the bulk of its manufacturing, especially of the most advanced chips, will remain in Taiwan, it is also building a plant in Japan and considering another one in Germany.

TSMC's Arizona factory has sparked concerns in Taiwan, where semiconductor manufacturing is the backbone of the economy, about a "goodbye to Taiwan" trend among chip firms. "TSMC's research and development centre is in Taiwan, the complete supply chain is here," she said. "Taiwan has a complete supply chain, a complete system, and the backing of the government. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (2330.TW), , as it is formally called, has repeatedly said that the bulk of its manufacturing will remain in Taiwan. It is also encouraging more foreign tech firms in the chip supply chain to invest in Taiwan.
